Veterans Eagle Cane Project

Originating with the Eastern Oklahoma Wood Carvers Association, nearly 30 states across the country are now carving these "Presentation Canes" for our injured veterans.
Here, in Maine, several of our MWCA chapter clubs are involved in the project.

We have some very GOOD NEWS! Thanks to some members of our Capital Carvers Chapter, we have a wonderful contact at Togus V.A. in Augusta, and will be getting referrals for recipients of these canes. With these referrals, we will be able to contact most recipients directly to talk with them and find out what they would like carved on the cane. This degree of personalizing, along with being able to present the canes "in person", will make them very special.

With this new contact, it appears that we may receive MANY requests for canes. In order to keep this project rolling, I am asking that each chapter of MWCA
PLEASE let me know:
  • if your chapter is taking part in the project
  • how many canes you have available
  • what supplies you are in need of
  • what supplies you may have to share with other MWCA Chapters.

The Capital Carvers Chapter is using 36" purchased ash dowels, tapered from 1 1/4" to 3/4". Maine Wood Turners Association members are turning the 3/4" diam. tenons at the top that will be inserted into the eagle head. Because the base of the eagle head is 1 3/4" diam. they are also turning adaptors that will be about 1" long, 1 1/4" diam. at the base and 1 3/4" diam. at the top. They are also turning a decorative bead or v-cut about 5" down from where the base of the eagle head will be to set off an area for personalization. The Maine Wood Turners web site now has a page dedicated to this project complete with photos. WE are very thankful for the enthusiasm and collaborative spirit of the Maine Wood Turners Association members!!!

If your chapter is unable to find a source for the cane shafts, please let me know. Capital Carvers now has 26 turned and ready to go and would be willing to sell a few at cost to get you started. I have uploaded a full size pattern in .jpg format (411 kb) Here are a few other links for you:
